european colonization of the americas :: essays research papers

Although there is some debate as to whether the prehistoric, Clovis culture was European in origin, the first generally accepted European colonists were the Norse, starting but then abandoning a colonisation process. (For more on this, see Vinland.) The first phase of modern European activity in this region began with the oceanic crossings of Christopher Columbus (1492-1500), sponsored by Spain, and those of other explorers such as John Cabot, sponsored by England, and Giovanni da Verrazano, sponsored by France and according to some the German Didrik Pining and, the possibly mythical, Polish John of Kolno 1473, sponsored by Denmark. This was followed, notably in the case of Spain, by a phase of conquest: The Spaniards (just having finished a war against the Muslims in the Iberian peninsula) replaced the Amerindian local oligarchies and impose a new religion: Christianity. European diseases and cruel systems of work (the famous haciendas and mining industry) decimated the Amerindian population. Black African slaves were introduced to substitute the Amerindian. On the other hand, the Spaniards did not impose their language in the same measure and the Catholic Church even evangelized in Quechua, Nahuatl and Guarani, contributing to the expansion of these Amerindian languages and equipping them with writing systems. One of the first school for Amerindians was founded by Fray Pedro de Gante in 1523. The Portuguese switched from an initial plan of establishing trading posts to an extensive colonization of what is now Brazil. (See also: Conquistador, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado, Hernà ¡n Cortà ©s, Francisco Pizarro, Spanish Conquest of Yucatan, Treaty of Tordesillas, Treaty of Alcaà §ovas) In the British and French regions, the focus of economy soon shifted from resource extraction to trading with the natives. This was also practiced by the Russians in the northwest coast of North America. After the French and Indian

A Poet Portfolio of James Joyce

James Augustine Joyce was born on the 2nd of February 1882 to a couple in Dublin. Two of his ten siblings died young from typhoid. As a boy, James studied at a boarding school in County Kildare. When his father could no longer pay the fees, the young Joyce transferred to a Christian Brothers school. However, Joyce rejected Catholicism in 1898 although philosophies of St. Thomas Aquinas became a strong influence in him even after he had left the brothers (Bradley 23).He studied modern languages at the University College Dublin in 1898. His first published work was a review of Ibsen's New Drama in 1900 which resulted in a letter of thanks from the Norwegian dramatist himself (Ellmann 13).Joyce left for Paris immediately after graduating. Unfortunately, he ended up squandering what little fortune his family still had. He returned to Ireland shortly after only to witness the final days of his mother who died of cancer in August 13, 1903. James resorted to heavy drinking after his mothers death, at the same time trying to make a meager living out of reviewing books, teaching and singing (Ellmann 15).In 1904, he met a young woman from Connemara by the name of Nora Barnacle who worked as a chambermaid who later on became his wife. The couple moved from Dublin and James experienced a great deal of trouble in finding work (Ellmann 16).James’ two major contributions to poetry are the books Chamber Music which is his first full length collection composed of 36 short lyrics published in 1907 and Pomes Penyeach which was published in twenty years later. (Ellmann 25)James’ works have been highly scrutinized by several well known personalities in their own right such as Mà ¡irtà n Ó Cadhain, Jorge Luis Borges, Flann O'Brien, and Samuel Beckett. He died on the 11th of January 1941 following complications after surgery for a perforated ulcer. James Joyce’s life is annually celebrated as Bloomsday every June 16 in Dublin and in other cities around the w orld. (Ellmann 20)

Consequences of a college student cheating on exams Essay

Consequences of a college student cheating on exams - Essay Example However, cheating comes with its consequences, many of which can prove to be harmful to the education and future career of a college student. College students have as many reasons as to why they cheat as they have methods to cheat. Some of the most common reasons as to why college students claim to cheat include not having enough time to study, the material was too hard to understand and they did not want to seek tutoring, and they had other stressful things going on in their lives that they could not possibly find time to care about studying. So, being unprepared for their exams, they prepare instead to cheat. They bring in sheets containing notes, facts, and even answers; they copy fellow students; some even obtain the actual test and simply memorize the answers. College students can get creative with how they cheat. However, if they put the same amount of effort into preparing for their tests, they would not have to rely on cheating. The consequences of cheating in college are a l ot different and more intense than consequences of cheating in elementary school, or even in high school. ... When a college student is caught cheating on an exam, the first course of action that is taken is that they not only receive a failing grade on that exam, but they usually receive a failing grade for the entire course. This is done for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, if the student was willing to cheat on an exam, there is nothing to suggest that they were honest with any of their work prior to taking the exam. Also, by cheating on the exam, they show that they are not serious about their education as a college student. When a student receives a failing grade for the class, they are often removed from the class and are not refunded their money for the remainder of the course (Noah & Eckstein 104). In the case that the class is a core class and is therefore required, the student usually faces the consequence of not being accepted back into that class in a later semester. Next, the student is brought before the student disciplinary board of their university. The disciplinary board will make the decision of what should happen next to the student. In most cases, if this is the student’s first time being caught cheating, they are put on academic probation, which can vary from one semester or until they graduate. Their grades are monitored, and they often have to take their tests alone and under strict supervision of a designated instructor. If they are caught cheating again, or if the person brought before the board is a repeat offender, the student is expelled from the college. Once a student has been caught cheating numerous times and are then expelled from their school, it becomes difficult to find another college that will take them because their record of cheating will follow them wherever they go. No other college is going to be

Sarbanes-Oxley Act Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Sarbanes-Oxley Act - Essay Example Based in Houston, Texas Enron has moved from its modest position to be the tagged as the 7th largest company in the United States and was expected to climb higher and stand out in the power and electric industries. In 2001, the company has 21,000 employees, believed to be in its peak operations. But there was no power shortage in California, hungry to profit more; in a tapped conversation, investors were discovered to have called the plant managers, asking them to shut down the power plants for ‘repairs’ even if there were no technical problems or such. With this ‘technical problems’ prices of electricity rose up to nine times. Enron was a blue chip stock, sold at 90 dollars per share; conniving with its accounting firm, the Arthur Andersen, it has carried out illegal accounting practices since mid 1990’s. It took the plunge when it was found out that its revenues were from trading with special purpose entities. It has at the same time anomalously not declared its losses and debts and from the 90 dollar per share, it has slipped down a 50 centavo per share in a matter of months after the scandal was made public. What made it more devastating was that the same modus was used by other companies such as the MCI-World com, Global Crossings and Tyco among others. The accounting firm that figured in the Enron scandal has handled some of the financial reports of these erring companies. From this economic mess, people feared to invest their money in the market. The government was expected to do something drastic. To make measures to combat the public’s fear to do business with the market. Thus Congressman Paul Sabanes from Maryland, former senator and the longest serving Congressman of Maryland with Michael Oxley from the 4th district of Ohio sat down and authored a bill to respond the problem. They designed a bill that will implement stricter policies for public companies to follow, professional and ethical guidelines for certified public accountants,

Enhancing a Home Computer Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Enhancing a Home Computer - Essay Example Buying a new one is quite expensive and is a waste of money if one already has a computer that is functioning well; in this case, upgrading the computer system seems to be a favorable option. A few changes here and there, and a computer system will be ready to take on any game to provide computer users with a better gaming experience (Kohler 234). Mostly, the problem experienced by gamers while gaming is the speed of the game; the games require higher amount of speed and the computer can only afford to provide a limited amount of speed. This happens because the Ram (Random Access Memory) of a particular gamer’s personal computer is lesser than the amount of space required to run a particular game. In this scenario, the gamer has to change the RAM of his/her personal computer. The RAM level should be higher than the desired amount of RAM required. Switching RAMs is quite easy and is less expensive than changing the entire personal computer. The current version of upgraded RAM on which the current high quality games are based and designed is DDR3; a 4GB RAM of DDR3 only costs around 50 pounds (Vandome 310). Just a small expense of 50 pounds, and the computer will be ready to help one play high quality games. Upgrade of RAM is not the only thing required to play high quality PC games; games now even require high quality video cards. Both RAM and video cards operate together to give a user the best experience of a particular game. The choice of video card depends on one’s pocket size; this means one’s willingness to spend money and the kind of games one wants to play (Dukish 210). If a particular game requires a gaming video card, it can not be played on a ordinary VGA card. Currently, the best available video cards for a gamer to make his PC a gaming paradise are GTX 460 and 570 (Debevec 125). The 460 one is much expensive than the
